Lighter’s LIT token fell sharply on September 30 after Robinhood disclosed that its upcoming U.S. crypto perpetual futures will be offered through Robinhood Derivatives and Bitstamp rather than Lighter. LIT briefly traded around $3.70 during the selloff, with market data showing a decline of roughly 15% over 24 hours at one point. The move followed Robinhood’s September 29 HOOD Summit announcement.
The market reaction, however, requires an important distinction. Robinhood still explicitly identifies Lighter as the decentralized perpetuals venue integrated into Robinhood Wallet, and its current support documentation describes how users deposit collateral and execute trades directly through Lighter’s smart contracts. The Bitstamp announcement creates a separate U.S. derivatives route rather than confirming that Robinhood has terminated its existing Lighter integration.
Bitstamp Takes Robinhood’s U.S. Perpetual Flow
Robinhood’s official HOOD Summit announcement says eligible U.S. customers will gain access to perpetual futures covering BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, DOGE, ADA, LINK and HYPE. BTC and ETH will support leverage of up to 10x, while the remaining contracts will offer up to 3x. The products will be offered by Robinhood Derivatives through Bitstamp, the exchange Robinhood acquired for $200 million in 2025.
That structure differs materially from Robinhood Wallet’s Lighter integration. Lighter perpetuals are non-custodial, execute through decentralized smart contracts and are available only in permitted jurisdictions. Robinhood’s disclosures specifically exclude U.S. residents from that service. The new Bitstamp arrangement therefore represents a missed path into Robinhood’s U.S. customer base for Lighter rather than displacement of existing U.S. Lighter volume.
Lighter nevertheless remains part of Robinhood’s wider on-chain ecosystem. Robinhood Chain documentation currently lists both Lighter and Arcus as perpetual DEX infrastructure, while Uniswap has already generated substantial decentralized trading activity on Robinhood Chain. Robinhood’s architecture increasingly supports several trading venues simultaneously rather than relying on one provider for every market or jurisdiction.
LIT Selloff Prices an Unconfirmed Growth Risk
The distinction helps explain why LIT could fall even without an announced termination. Robinhood’s U.S. brokerage offers access to a much larger regulated customer channel than the jurisdiction-limited Wallet integration, making the selection of Bitstamp relevant to assumptions about Lighter’s future distribution. What changed is the expected opportunity set, not the documented status of the existing partnership.
Robinhood’s broader blockchain activity has been expanding rapidly, including more than $70 billion in cumulative Uniswap volume on Robinhood Chain and approximately $11.4 billion in recent tokenized-stock DEX turnover across Robinhood and Coinbase-linked markets. Those figures measure gross trading activity rather than capital invested, but they illustrate why access to Robinhood-linked distribution has become economically significant for trading protocols.
No public statement from Robinhood or Lighter currently says the Wallet partnership has ended. Robinhood’s support pages continue to explain Lighter trading, funding and liquidation mechanics, while Lighter remains identified in Robinhood Chain documentation. The immediate milestone is whether Robinhood changes that documentation or Lighter discloses how the Bitstamp-led U.S. rollout affects its integration and economics. Until then, LIT’s decline reflects a market repricing of future growth expectations rather than confirmation that Robinhood has dropped Lighter.
