The Cardano Foundation and Petrobras have developed two blockchain applications designed to improve the traceability of sustainability information associated with sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. Announced on September 30 as part of an ongoing research and development collaboration, the projects use Cardano as a public verification layer for environmental claims and fuel lifecycle records rather than tokenizing ownership of the underlying fuel itself.
The initiatives target separate parts of the renewable-fuel market. One application covers Sustainable Aviation Fuel, or SAF, through a book-and-claim structure developed with Petrobras and PUC-Rio’s Ledger Labs. The second applies blockchain records to Petrobras’ Diesel R supply chain. Both projects focus on making fragmented environmental information easier to trace and audit across organizations, extending Cardano Foundation’s existing work with Brazilian institutions including SERPRO and SENAI São Paulo.
Cardano Tracks SAF Environmental Claims
The SAF application separates the environmental benefit associated with sustainable fuel from the physical fuel itself. Under the book-and-claim model, an airline, company or passenger can receive that environmental benefit even when the corresponding SAF is produced or consumed somewhere else. Cardano records where the benefit originated, where it was allocated and whether it has already been claimed, addressing the risk that the same environmental attribute could be counted more than once.
The application also includes an individual passenger workflow. Users can enter departure and destination airports, calculate the corresponding amount of CS-SAF, the digital token representing the environmental benefit, and receive a certificate recording the route, distance and allocation. CS-SAF represents an environmental claim linked to an original fuel certificate, not direct ownership of physical aviation fuel. That distinction is important when comparing the project with financial real-world asset structures that tokenize investment exposure, where the token can represent contractual economic rights to an underlying financial product.
Diesel R uses a different model. The proposed system creates digital checkpoints covering production, transportation and consumption, forming a continuous record of the fuel’s lifecycle. Petrobras separately said in September that its Reduc refinery had been authorized to produce Diesel R with 8.5% renewable content. For the Cardano project, the relevant use case is data provenance: linking supply-chain information that companies may use when documenting indirect Scope 3 emissions. The Foundation says the model is intended to improve traceability and auditability, but it has not published commercial deployment volumes or evidence that the system is already tracking Petrobras fuel at production scale.
Research Applications Stop Short of Commercial Rollout
The initiatives therefore represent more than a conceptual partnership, because the Foundation says the teams have delivered two blockchain applications. However, delivered R&D infrastructure should not be equated with a full commercial deployment or demonstrated large-scale adoption. Neither the announcement nor the accompanying material provides a rollout schedule, fuel volume processed through the applications or usage metrics showing how extensively Petrobras has incorporated the systems into operational reporting.
The distinction also applies to other pieces of Cardano infrastructure developing around the network. A Cardano-Injective IBC connection is currently live on testnet, not mainnet, while Ouroboros Leios has reached high throughput in simulations and entered public testnet development. Cardano’s x402 payment implementation has meanwhile progressed into working code. Those developments expand Cardano’s technical capabilities, but they are separate from the evidence that Petrobras’ fuel-traceability applications themselves have reached production scale.
Institutional connectivity is similarly still developing. Cardano Foundation and Fireblocks announced full support for Cardano Native Tokens on September 24, but the capability is expected to become available by March 2027 rather than being fully live today. The Petrobras work is therefore best understood on its own terms: two R&D applications exploring how a public blockchain can provide an independently inspectable trail for environmental data, with commercial scale and sustained operational usage still to be demonstrated.
