Aptos has scheduled the first reset of its public Testnet for October 7, 2026, introducing a periodic maintenance model intended to contain growing infrastructure and storage requirements. The reset will return Testnet to a fresh genesis state, permanently clearing existing contracts, test accounts, token balances and transaction history.
According to the official Aptos announcement, Mainnet and Devnet will not be affected by the operation. Developers using Testnet will need to redeploy contracts and rebuild affected testing environments after the reset, while node operators will resynchronize against the new state.

Aptos Targets Growing Testnet Storage
The decision follows substantial growth in Testnet activity, with the network having processed more than 10 billion transactions. Aptos Labs said archival nodes are approaching 30 TB while the indexer database has surpassed 70 TB. Allowing that historical state to expand indefinitely would continue increasing infrastructure costs for node operators and service providers.
The maintenance framework is described in AIP-147, introduced by Aptos Labs engineer Sherry Xiao. The proposal allows Testnet resets when necessary, but no more frequently than once every six months and with at least one month of advance public notice. AIP-147 remains in draft and open for review even as the first reset moves forward.
The model reflects the different roles of production and testing networks. Mainnet history must remain persistent, while Testnet exists primarily as an environment for validating applications, integrations and infrastructure before production deployment. Periodic resets allow Aptos to keep Testnet hardware requirements bounded without altering Mainnet’s permanent ledger history.
Developers Must Rebuild Testnet State
For development teams, the main operational consequence is the loss of state tied specifically to the existing Testnet genesis. Applications relying on fixed Testnet addresses, deployed packages or historical data will need to prepare for those dependencies to disappear on October 7.
Aptos is pointing developers toward Forklift when persistent production-scale state is required for testing. The tool can create local environments based on live Mainnet state, providing an alternative to depending on years of accumulated public Testnet history. Forklift gives teams a way to reproduce realistic network conditions locally even after Testnet itself starts again from genesis.
The October reset is therefore an infrastructure-management event rather than a protocol failure or Mainnet disruption. Aptos is trading permanent Testnet history for lower storage overhead and a more sustainable testing environment, with the first reset serving as the practical implementation of a maintenance strategy that could be repeated as future state growth requires.
